Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, abbreviated as HCG or hCG, is a complex glycoprotein hormone composed of two non-covalently associated subunits known as alpha and beta. It is investigated in controlled laboratory models involving glycoprotein-hormone receptor binding, intracellular signaling and luteinizing-hormone receptor pathways.
Experimental investigations may examine interactions with the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor, commonly abbreviated as LHCGR, as well as receptor activation, cyclic-AMP-associated signaling and differences between urinary-derived and recombinant HCG preparations.
HCG is glycosylated and can exist in multiple glycoforms. Consequently, it should not be assigned one universal molecular formula or exact molecular weight.
